All My Friends Are Boys

Hello, my problem is that I’m 12 years old, me and my sister go out for fun sometimes and then we meet our friends, all of our friends are boys, but they are also really good kids.

Anyway recently my mom has starting to be suspicious just because we went out two two  days in the same week! She asked us to be home by 6pm but in summer I came home at 10pm and she hardly said a word! My sister suggested to tell her that “some” of our friends were boys.

We told her, but she only got worse. There has been two big changes in my life in the past two years and that’s been really hard on me so I can’t afford to loose this fun now. What should I do, please help me!

Dear Medis,

Thanks for your question. First of all, be thankful that you have a mom that cares what you do and who you go out with. Many kid’s aren’t so lucky and have to more or less raise themselves which usually doesn’t turn out so good.

I think 6pm on a school night isn’t too much to ask as school and your education comes first or it should if you want to really succeed in life. However, if you want your mom to be more lenient in regards to these friendships, you’ll have to let her meet these boys and spend a little time around them.

You say they are good kids, but she will need to see this for herself. My suggestion would be to have them around to your house when your mom is there so she can get to know them a bit. Have them around for a DVD, dinner, or something so that your mom will believe that they are good kids and feel comfortable letting you hang out with them.

Your mom’s only looking out for you and in this day and age when there are so many weirdos and people looking to take advantage of kids, it’s a good thing. Just respect her judgment and help ease her mind by allowing her to know who your friends are.

All the best,

Ted
