life-purposeI’ve been brain injured for thirty years nearly and I do not know what to do with my life. I do not have children and I don’t seem to have any purpose. I cannot seem to figure out any.

-Jasper

Dear Jasper,

Thanks for your question and it sounds like life has been tough for you as your injury has been keeping you from being the person you want to be.

The key to overcoming difficulties such as your own, is deciding to not let the disability define you, but to rise above it and do great things despite of it. History is riddled with amazing people who have overcome great disabilities and who greatly have impacted the world. Think of Helen Keller and Nick Vujicic from Australia that was born with no limbs (his video is on the Videos 4 Life page).

I recommend that you pour your life into other people. It may be visiting the elderly in the nursing home or visiting people in the hospital who could be starting the journey that you have been living for 30 years. Just look for ways to help people (hurting, lonely people are everywhere) and let that become your purpose.

I assure you that helping others will do more for your joy than the people you are helping and it can radically change your life while greatly impacting the lives of others. I’m sure you are a special guy with a lot of great qualities that can really help people. Don’t let your disability destroy you, but rise above and thrive despite your brain injury.

I pray the best for you as you find this new purpose and keep striving to live life to the full.

Sincerely,

Ted

should-i-tell-the-truthOk, I’ve been feeling sad for a long time and unsure to tell my mum.  I’m unsure of what to do. I’ve been feeling that way a year and 1/2 and now, soon after Christmas it will be 2 years..

I’ve never told my mum.. I know I need to tell her how I feel and why, but I can’t. I don’t want her to know what I did and I don’t want her to know everything, I don’t want to explain. I don’t want a doctor to know and I don’t want to be put on medication. Plus I don’t want to be judged..

hurting-lonely-at-christmas-timeAre you tired of the Christmas ads yet? You know the ones that show happy families together for the holidays, having the best time of their year, not a care in the world, and surrounded by those that they love and love them.

Unfortunately, this is not the reality of  many  people  during the holiday season. Many will be alone, hurting, and depressed. The holidays only seem to magnify the emotional pain that people live with. Why is this, you may ask? It’s because the commercialism of Christmas starts in October with advertisements and movies that depict these perfect families and preach the message that the holidays are all about being with family and those you love. god-is-not-disappointed-in-youI don’t know about you, but for me growing up in a very fundamental Christian church, I was fed a lot of false doctrine.

These people didn’t mean to bring harm, but because of their lack of understanding the character of God, they in turn poisoned others’ minds with this ignorance. As I’ve confronted some of these beliefs and have sought out God for myself, I discovered that much of what I was taught about God was indeed wrong.

One such concept is that God has been disappointed in me. Read the rest of this entry »

so-you-dont-want-to-go-to-church-anymoreDo you feel yourself going through the motions when it comes to going to church?

Do you feel guilty about not wanting to go every Sunday?

Or perhaps every time you go to church you feel guilty for not giving enough money or not being involved enough in church programs.

Well, you’re not alone as many Christians find the institution we call “church” just isn’t fulfilling what our souls are seeking. So You Don’t Want to Go to Church Anymore, written by Wayne Jacobson and Dave Coleman is one of the best books I’ve read this year. Read the rest of this entry »
