Ask: I Married the Wrong Guy Because He Was a Christian

I am 27 years old and married 3 years back. I had a boyfriend before marriage. We were in love, but I was very stubborn and thought that I should marry only a Christian.

So I didn’t marry him and married some guy whom my parents told me to marry. My boyfriend and I couldn’t forget each other. We became more close as we were missing each other and two times we had sex during my marriage. We did not have it before my marriage.

We have been in love for 3 years. My husband is very good man. Now I am not able to avoid my boyfriend at all. He can’t forget me and even i can’t forget him. Should I still try to end our relationship somehow or should l tell my husband what happened and get out of this marriage? My husband loves me so I’m afraid it will hurt him. I’m feeling very guilty cheating my husband, but I would move the world for my boyfriend.

Dear Lily,

Thanks for writing and sharing your situation with us. It is pretty obvious to me that you married the wrong guy. While the church means well, their misinterpretation of scripture and faulty teaching puts many like you in wrong marriages and then trapped because they teach that divorce is also wrong.

You really just need to come clean with your husband and let the chips fall where they may. Yes, he will be hurt but better now than after more time cheating on him and trying to live a double life. You are really doing him a favor as he deserves a woman that will cherish him and love him only.

If this boyfriend is a good guy and he treats you well then the fact that he is or isn’t a Christian really isn’t a major issue. What’s more important is how well this guy loves you and others. Through your love for one another he might just encounter God in a real way. Everyone makes mistakes and we are all in need of grace. Just admit your mistakes before more damage is done and then let it go and move on with a future filled with love and happiness with the guy you were probably meant to be with in the first place.

Kind regards,

Ted
