Stole From My Company Now Trying to Start Fresh

stole-second-chanceTwo years ago, out of desperation I stole from my Company that was going bankrupt. I was not the only employee, but the only one identified. I was a full time employee, after they started cutting hours and firing people I couldn’t make enough for; rent, gas and food. So I stole some equipment to sell.

After I was eventually fired due to management of labor an officer came by my house 2 weeks later. Needless to say they found the equipment and I was charged with 3 class C felony counts. Out of all the employees they only found items at my house, and couldn’t identify two others on camera.

I have a bachelors degree with what was a promising future. I ended up negotiating with my lawyer and court, not too charge me with felonies. I ended up agreeing to pay the total amount of missing inventory as restitution and do 4 years probation with a SIS (suspended sentence), so no conviction.

It’s been two years since the crimes and 1 year complete of probation. I am on the lowest supervision just calling in to check up. All restitution paid etc. I have a part time job that pays pretty well enough for rent, food, gas, and saving with leisurely spending money if needed.

The dilemma I have is I’m applying for full time jobs. I volunteer at a local gym for supervision and even help coach youth leagues. Since I have helped for so long I applied for the full time job. After they found out about my past case they never followed up. I told them the truth and how everything is settled.

Anytime I go in they seem to judge me differently. I ask for opportunities, send texts, and try to talk about it but they keep saying we’ll let you know. This is while they hire new staff. I also know they told some others outside of gym, seeing as I was asked about it at my other job by a fellow staff member.

I have applied at other jobs as well almost 2 a day and nothing comes of it. I just need input on how to deal with this. If I can’t get a job and times get tough I don’t want to fall back in the situation that I’m dealing with.

I go to church weekly, volunteer, help others constantly and do what I’m suppose too. Why does it seem like I can’t get a second chance.

Dear James,

I think it’s great that you have been honest and have fulfilled all of your obligations with making amends for what you did.

I think part of the problem is the economy and the other part is indeed your past.

Employers will be leery of your record. I think you should continue to work and volunteer and build up your reputation. This way you can get new references and people to vouch for you. Eventually you can use all of these people on your resume’ and you won’t even have to mention your prior record.

Since you weren’t charged with a felony or convicted you can answer honestly on applications and you will also have the new references and work experience to back you up.

I think you have to continue to be patient and if need be perhaps even move to a different city where you can have a totally clean slate. You’ll get a break because it seems like you are an honest and great guy who just made a bad decision out of desperation.

Hang in there and eventually you’ll be back on your feet.

Kindest regards,

Ted
